Flavours of Fall with Fisher and Paykel: Baked-Apple Apple Fritters

Fall is here and it’s one of our favourite seasons. The weather gets cooler and the leaves are changing colour, but best of all, apple season is in full swing! Nothing says fall quite like apple cider, apple pie, baked apples, and apple fritters, so we figured why not take two of our favourites and blend them together to make some delicious “baked apple” fritters! Thanks to using the Fisher and Paykel steam oven we were able to steam the apples with sugar and spices and make them perfectly tender, before dipping them in a fritter batter and deep frying to golden perfection.

If you want to make your own “baked apple” fritters at home, you’ll need the following:

  1. Begin by preheating a steam oven to 200f and 100% steam, or a conventional oven to 300f.
  2. Next wash, core and peel your apples. Then slice into 3/4-inch rounds.
  3. Lay the apple rounds out onto one of the baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
  4. Sprinkle the apple rounds with half of the ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg, then flip the apples over and sprinkle the remaining spices on the other side.
  5. Generously cover the apples with brown sugar, and drizzle with maple syrup. Then place them in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until all the sugar has melted and the apples feel tender but not mushy.
  6. Once the apples are baked, remove them from the oven and flip all the apple rounds over to allow the tops of the apples to get saturated with the sugar and spices, and allow to cool on the counter.
  7. While the apples cool down, heat up oil in a large stock pot to 325f to prepare for deep-frying the fritters.
  8. In a large mixing bowl, mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour, and all of the white sugar, baking powder, salt, milk and egg and whisk until a smooth batter is formed.
  9. Put the remaining 2 cups of flour into a second large bowl.
  10. Once the oil has finished heating up, toss the apple rounds into the plain flour to help the batter stick to the apples, and then place into the fritter batter and fully coat the apples with the batter.
  11. Carefully place your battered apples into the oil and allow the fritters to fry for 1-2 minutes before using an asian strainer or fork to gently flip the fritters over to fry the other side.
  12. After another 1-2 minutes of frying, use the asian strainer to lift the apples out of the oil and let the excess oil drain off. Place the cooked fritters onto another baking sheet lined with paper towel.
  13. Let the fritters cool for 4-5 minutes before eating, best served fresh and warm!

This is a super delicious recipe that’s packed full of fall flavours and is so simple to make. It’s also so versatile of a recipe, you can try using different apples, such as granny smiths to give a more sour flavour, add different spices to the apples, or for a little extra sweetness you can toss the freshly fried fritters in some cinnamon sugar or glaze with a simple icing sugar and milk glaze!
