Shake it Up: It’s Chocolate Milkshake Day!

Written by: Anna Carroll

Can’t make it to your favourite diner to celebrate? With just two ingredients and a strong blender, you can create the classic at home!

For our milkshakes, we use the KitchenAid K400 Blender. Its sleek and minimal design is straightforward and to the point - perfect for blending a simple, yet divine, chocolate milkshake. Ideally, milkshakes should be thick, with a strong ice cream flavour. Any mix-ins should be small enough to be sucked up a straw. To get the best texture, make sure to start with a high-quality chocolate ice cream without any additional mix-ins like cookie crumbs or fudge swirls - those are much better if added at the end. What’s in a milkshake? Just good quality ice cream and a bit of milk!

The ice cream should be slightly softened to give the best consistency. Just picked up from the store is perfect. If the ice cream has been in your freezer for a while, leave it on the counter for about 15 minutes (or the fridge for 20 if you’re like me and easily distracted) before getting started.

Note: This is a lot of dairy. Thankfully, for those of us that can no longer digest lactose or handle casein, there has been an uptick in delicious dairy-free offerings. If choosing a dairy-free frozen dessert, make sure it's something full of fat, such as those made with coconut or cashew milk.

  • 1-1 ⅓ cup milk (or creamy milk substitute)

Directions

Chill the glasses in the freezer.

Make sure your ice cream has been softened slightly - either straight from the store or allowed to sit on the counter for about 15 minutes.

In a blender, add the ice cream and milk. “Respect the vortex” - Begin on low and gradually increase the speed to medium until smooth.

If using any add-ins, add to the blender and mix for 5-10 seconds.

Pour the milkshake into chilled glasses, and top as desired. Serve immediately!
